A full field of eight teams will converge on the Seymour High School gymnasium this Thursday, Friday and Saturday as The Seymour Bank Winter Classic features varsity and junior-varsity boys’ basketball tournaments.
First-round action was played on Monday evening and Tuesday evening.
The final two rounds of the tourney will be played this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
For the varsity event, Chadwick, a new entry this year, is the top seed. The Cardinals enter the tournament with a perfect 9-0 record and are on the verge of a statewide ranking in Class 1.
Class 4 power Mountain Grove is the second seed.
Mountain View-Birch Tree Liberty, like Mountain Grove, another Class 4 school from the South Central Association, is seeded third.
Springfield Lighthouse Christian, the tourney’s runner-up squad a year ago, is the fourth seed, while Cabool is seeded fifth.
Bradleyville is the No. 6 seed, while the host Tigers of Seymour, the defending tournament champion, are seeded seventh.
Theodosia-Lutie is the eighth seed.
In head-to-head matchups against tourney teams, the host Tigers have defeated Cabool, while losing contests against Bradleyville and Liberty.
Seymour enters the tournament with a 4-6 record after winning three straight games in tourney action over the holiday break at Walnut Grove.
After the first-round action on Monday and Tuesday, the tourney has a full slate of games the next three days.
Consolation semifinal games are at 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, while the winners’ semifinals contests are set for 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. on Friday.
All final-round varsity games will be played all day on Saturday.
The junior-varsity field includes all of the aforementioned teams except Lutie, which does not have a jayvee squad.
Lutie will be replaced in the jayvee tourney by Conway.
Seymour’s junior varsity opened play Monday against Chadwick.
Subsequent Tiger jayvee games will be played on either Thursday or Friday, depending on the outcome of the first-round contest, as well as final-round play on Saturday.
Action at the tourney starts at 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.
