Although their school campuses are only 11 miles apart and both are Class 2 schools in basketball, Fordland High School and Seymour High School aren’t in the same basketball district for the second consecutive year.

Instead, Seymour remains in District 10.

Fordland is in District 11.

“The good news is that we stayed in Class 2,” Seymour head girls’ coach Derrick Jessen said with a smile when the assignments were announced last week.

“There was a legitimate concern that we would bump up to Class 3, so I was pleased to see we stayed in Class 2.”

In Seymour’s Class 2 District 10 Tournament, the teams include:

  • Bakersfield
  • Cabool
  • Dora
  • Gainesville
  • Norwood
  • Plato
  • Seymour

It’s the same schools for boys’ and girls’ basketball.

And it’s uncertain where the district tournament will be played. Athletic directors and coaches will decide that issue later this season.

“I’d guess the likely spot for the district tourney will be Cabool,” Jessen said. “Cabool has a large gym that’s been used for district tournaments many times.

“Once we get our new gym built, I hope to see the district tourneys here.”

Seymour’s central location on four-lane U.S. 60 seems conducive for future district events.

In Fordland’s Class 2 District 11 Tournament, the teams include:

  • Billings,
  • Blue Eye
  • Bradleyville
  • Crane
  • Fordland
  • Galena
  • Springfield New Covenant for the boys

For the girls, the same teams are present, as well as Springfield Greenwood.

Greenwood was bumped to Class 3 for its boys’ team because of past successes, including several district championships and deep playoff runs.
