A year ago, Willard finished the spring baseball season with 33 victories and placed third statewide in Class 5.
The year before, Willard won 27 spring games and the Class 5 state title.
This year, Willard already has 19 wins and enters this week on a nine-game winning streak.
Next Tuesday, the Seymour High School varsity baseball team wraps up its regular season with a 4:30 p.m. game at Willard, where a real-life "David vs. Goliath" contest could unfold.
Both teams are state ranked — Willard in Class 5 and Seymour in Class 2.
For most of the spring, Willard has been Missouri's No. 1-ranked team in Class 5.
"This will be a huge challenge for us," Tiger head coach Ty Lumley said. "(Willard coach) Scott McGee has built a perennial powerhouse up there, and the last three times there has been a Class 5 'Final Four,' Willard has made it."
Seymour senior ace Chade Noble will be the Tigers' starting pitcher at Willard, Lumley noted.
This spring, Noble is a perfect 8-0 on the mound with an earned-run average below 1.00. He has averaged more than two strikeouts per inning with a fastball that tops out above 90 miles per hour. He recently committed to play college baseball at State Fair Community College in Sedalia.
Game time on Tuesday is 4:30 p.m.
