The Seymour High School junior-varsity girls' basketball team is entering the Christmas break on a five-game winning streak after defeating Laquey by a 20-18 count in home action Friday.
After an 0-2 start, the Tigers have won five in a row and enter the holidays with a 5-2 record.
"This bodes very well for the program," Tiger head coach Derrick Jessen said. "For fi ve years, we were without a jayvee team for the girls' program due to a lack of numbers, so it was great this year just to be able to field a team.
"For this group to also have success is just icing on the cake."
Better yet, the squad is all freshmen and a single sophomore.
"It's a very balanced team," Jessen noted.
On Friday, the Tigers trailed Laquey 9-5 at the half before rallying to take a 15-11 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Leading Seymour's scoring charge was freshman Allie Alexander with 5 points, while classmate Alleigh Warren added 4.
Freshmen guards Makayla Rowland and Katelynn Smith each scored 3, while freshmen Jadyn Johnson and Elisa Valbuena each had 2 points.
Sophomore Adria Sturdefant rounded out the scoring with 1 point.
