A pair of first-team selections to the all-Summit Conference squad were the statistical leaders in most categories for the Seymour High School varsity girls’ basketball team in the just-completed 2022-23 season, according to Tiger statistics released last week by head coach Derrick Jessen.
Seymour’s girls finished the campaign with a record of 15-10 overall and 3-3 in the Summit Conference.
For the past two seasons, 5’7” senior guard Lillie Rasmussen and 6’1” sophomore forward Addison Ridenour have been named to the all-Summit first team.
Rasmussen, who passed the 1,000-point mark early in the season, led the Tigers with 463 points in 25 games, a per-game average of 18.5.
Ridenour was next in scoring with an average of 11.5 per game, as she scored 288 points in 25 games.
They were Seymour’s only players to average double figures in scoring.
Next on the team was 5’1” senior guard Kenzie Gage, who averaged 4.8 points. In 25 games, she scored 121 points.
Other scoring averages for the Tiger girls included 5’5” junior guard Katie Smith (25 games, 98 points, 3.9 average), 5’5” junior guard Jadyn Johnson (22 games, 84 points, 3.8 average), 5’10” sophomore forward Hanna Stoneking (25 games, 64 points, 2.6 average) and 5’6” senior forward Adria Sturdefant (25 games, 18 points, 0.8 average).
Tiger players who saw limited duty and scored points were 5’4” sophomore guard Haydon Gage (16 points), 5’2” junior guard Elisa Valbuena (14 points), 5’7” sophomore forward Kaylynne Bull (3 points) and 5’4” freshman forward Paisha Sturdefant (3 points).
As a team, Seymour scored 1,172 points during the 25-game season — an average of 46.9 per game.
Defensively, the Tigers allowed only 1,006 points in those games — only 40.2 points per game.
Overall, Seymour’s field-goal percentage was at 36.3 percent (432 for 1,189). On two-point shots, the Tigers hit 329
of 770 (42.6 percent), while the team’s accuracy from three-point range was at 24.7 percent (103 for 417).
The Tigers hit 205 of 342 free throws — 59.9 percent.
In other statistical areas, Rasmussen and Ridenour led the way in most categories, per Jessen’s final statistics.
Ridenour was the Tigers’ leading rebounder with 172, an average of 6.9 per game.
Next was Rasmussen with 143 rebounds (5.7 average), and Stoneking was third at 105 rebounds (4.2 average).
Other Seymour rebounding totals included Smith at 70, Kenzie Gage and Adria Sturdefant with 64 each, Johnson with 63, Valbuena at 23, while Haydon Gage grabbed 8.
Smith was the Tigers’ assist leader with 84.
Rasmussen was second at 58, followed by Kenzie Gage with 41 and Ridenour with 37.
Johnson had 17 assists.
The team’s steals leader was Rasmussen at 92. In her four-year Tiger career, she had nearly 350 steals.
Smith was second with 51 steals. Other Seymour steals’ totals included Ridenour at 27, Kenzie Gage and Johnson at 25 each, Stoneking with 16, and Adria Sturdefant with 8.
Also in defensive categories, Smith led the Tigers with 101 deflections, while Rasmussen was next with 71. Other deflection totals were Johnson at 40, Ridenour at 39, Kenzie Gage at 31, Stoneking at 19, Valbuena at 12, and Adria Sturdefant at 9.
Ridenour led the Tigers with 44 blocked shots, an average of 1.8 per game.
Stoneking was next with 17 blocks. No other Tiger had more than two.
Several Seymour girls were in the running to be the team’s top free-throw shooter.
By percentage, Haydon Gage led the way at 70 percent (7 for 10). Next was Rasmussen at 65.5 percent (74 for 113), followed by Kenzie Gage and Jadyn Johnson, each at 65.4 percent (both were 17 for 26 at the line).
Smith shot 64.9 percent (24 for 37), while Ridenour was at 60.8 percent (45 for 74).
From the field, Rasmussen was the top Tiger at 41.4 percent (178 for 430), followed by Ridenour at 39.2 percent (116 for 296). Johnson was next at 38.4 percent (28 for 73).
No other Tiger shot better than 32.3 percent.
On two-point shots, the results were similar, with Rasmussen leading the way at 53.9 percent (145 for 269), while Ridenour was at 43.8 percent (105 for 240).
Rasmussen led the Tigers with 33 three-pointers made.
She hit 33 of 161 (20.5 percent).
Next was Kenzie Gage, who was 20 for 72 (27.8 percent), while Smith was 16 for 55 (29.1 percent).
Johnson and Ridenour each hit 11 three-point shots.
In terms of percentage, Johnson was Seymour’s leading three-point shooter at 39.3 percent (11 for 28).
Lost to graduation after the 2022-23 season are Kenzie Gage, Rasmussen and Adria Sturdefant.
A year ago, the Tigers finished 17-10 overall and 4-2 in league play. Over the past two seasons, the Seymour girls have won 32 games; prior to that, the Tigers hadn’t had a season with 10 wins since the 2013-14 campaign.
