Funeral services for Betty Jane Swearengin of Diggins were held Thursday, Sept. 16, 2021, in the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home of Seymour. Burial followed in the Gentry Cemetery, under the direction of the funeral home.
Mrs. Swearengin, 91, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021.
She was born on May 6, 1930, north of Diggins to V.E. and Betty Jane Haney Heard.
After being born north of Diggins at the old Albers place, her family moved to Purdy when she was 6 months old. At the age of 12, the family returned to Diggins.
On March 10, 1948, she married Bobby Joe Swearengin,
and to this union one daughter and one son were born.
She was a factory worker working for Sunshine Biscui in Kansas City, Lily Tulip in Springfield, H.D. Lee in Seymour, then R.T. French’s in Springfield before retiring after 18-1/2 years of loyal service.
She attended the Diggins Apostolic Church.
In her spare time, she loved painting, gardening and yard work.
Preceding her in death by her parents; her husband; her sisters, Loretta Bruton, Mable Evans, Hazel Heard, Marie Cornelison Cantrell, Margaret Cummins, June Douthitt Bennett and Twylah Owens Willard; and her brothers, Floyd, Virgil, Jess and Jerry.
Survivors include her son, Rick J. Swearengin and Julie of Springfield; and her daughter, Sandy Newman and husband Gary of Diggins; four grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and her sister-inlaw, Wanda Heard.
