- Seymour’s snowfall: 8 inches

In Seymour, the official measurement was 8 inches.

“The good news is that is was a very wet snow that our crews were able to plow and treat pretty easily,” Seymour City Administrator Hillary Elliott said. “On the evening of Jan. 24, the police let our street crews know that the snow was beginning to accumulate, so our guys were able to get on top of the situation early and keep the snow cleared on our streets as it fell.”

By 8 a.m. last Wednesday, as the snow quit falling, Seymour’s main city streets were clear, while all of the city’s other streets were plowed.

In comparison, lettered state highways around Seymour often remained covered as the city’s streets were virtually free of snow, despite 8 inches falling.

Classes at the Seymour R-II School District were canceled last Wednesday and Thursday due to the snowfall; however, classes resumed last Friday.

Superintendent Steve Richards credited crews from the Seymour Special Road District and the Webster County Road Department for doing a good job in clearing the snow from the rural roads that serve Seymour’s students.

“Throughout our (school) district, I felt that the snow removal on our rural roads was excellent,” he said.

“We considered going back to school on Thursday, as the two road departments in rural Seymour did a good job pushing the snow, but we chose to be cautious because of the heavy snowfall.”

This week, a different type of winter weather struck the Seymour area early Monday as an icy mist with intermittent snow fell. These conditions are expected to continue until Wednesday, as temperatures will remain below the freezing mark, with lows around 10 degrees are expected, while the high temperature won’t break 32 degrees until Thursday.
