- Seeds set for TSB Winter Classic

Next week, the Seymour High School gymnasium plays host to The Seymour Bank Winter Classic.

  • UPDATE: The first game set for today (Jan. 4) will start at 3 p.m. instead of 4 p.m. Seymour’s junior varsity will open play at 3 p.m. today against Chadwick.

A full field of eight teams will converge on the Seymour High School gymnasium from next Monday through Saturday, Jan. 9, as The Seymour Bank Winter Classic features varsity and junior-varsity boys’ basketball tournaments.

For the varsity event, Chadwick, a new entry this year, is the top seed.

At a seed meeting held on Wednesday, Dec. 16, by tourney coaches, the undefeated Cardinals, with a perfect 9-0 record entering the holiday break, were seeded first.

Mountain Grove, despite an 0-4 record when the coaches met, received the No. 2 seed, followed by Mountain View Liberty as the third seed. Liberty’s record was 4-1 at the seed meeting and now stands at 8-3.

Springfield Lighthouse Christian, with a 6-2 record, is the fourth seed, followed by a 4-4 Cabool team in the No. 5 slot. Bradleyville (3-4 record) is seeded sixth, followed by Seymour (1-5 record when coaches met) as the seventh seed. Theodosia-Lutie is the eighth seed.

In head-to-head matchups against tourney teams, the host Tigers have defeated Cabool, while losing contests against Bradleyville and Liberty.

Varsity action will be played on five nights.

In the first round next Monday, No. 1 Chadwick will face No. 8 Lutie at 5:30 p.m., followed by an 8:30 p.m. contest between No. 4 Lighthouse Christian and No. 5 Cabool.

Next Tuesday, the first-round games include No. 2 Mountain Grove versus No. 7 Seymour at 5:30 p.m. and an 8:30 p.m. matchup between No. 3 Liberty and No. 6 Bradleyville.

Consolation semifinal games are at 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 7, while the winners’ semifinals contests are set for 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 8.

All final-round varsity games will be played on Saturday, Jan. 9.

The junior-varsity field includes all of the aforementioned teams except Lutie, which does not have a jayvee squad.

Lutie will be replaced in the jayvee tourney by Conway.

Seymour’s junior varsity will open play at 4 p.m. next Monday against Chadwick.

Subsequent Tiger jayvee games will be played on either Thursday, Jan. 7, or Friday, Jan. 8, depending on the outcome of the first-round contest, as well as final-round play on Saturday, Jan. 9.
