A Mansfield man who allegedly took a zero-turn lawnmower from a Seymour home on North Frances Street now faces a Class D felony stealing charge after the mower was recovered last month.
Arrested in Ava on the Webster County felony charge was Bo Tyler Matney, 24, who on Jan. 21 completed a statement form for Sgt. Gabe Stroud of the Seymour Police Department that said, "I, Bo Matney, took the lawn mower without consent. I would like to apologize."
Matney had been arrested that day in Ava on several warrants, then was taken to the Douglas County Jail, where he was interviewed by Stroud.
The initial theft of the zero-turn lawnmower was investigated by Patrolman Judd Taylor of the Seymour Police Department, who recovered the missing mower — a 2020 zero-turn Bad Boy brand model with a 54-inch deck — in less than a day.
The value of the mower was $3,800.
Taylor ultimately found the stolen lawnmower in the garage of a home on North Division Street.
Also found inside the garage were two other items that Matney allegedly stole from the same North Frances Street residence — a Reddy Heater with a value of $120 and a ProTemp brand heater valued at $80.
The stolen items were returned to the owner.
Sgt. Chase Davis of the Seymour force said that Taylor also found a tool bag with various tools and part of a chainsaw in a yard on North Frances Street when he was searching for the missing lawnmower.
As of Monday, the owner of these items has not been found. Anyone who is missing any tools on the north side of Seymour is encouraged to contact the Seymour Police Department.
In Matney's interview on Jan. 21 with Stroud, he said that he "was going to sell the lawn mower for cash," Stroud's report said, a statement he made before completing the statement form where he apologized for the theft.
