During the time period from Jan. 1 through Jan. 31, the Seymour Police Department answered 234 calls for service, issued 72 traffic warnings and 20 summons, and 12 people were booked into the Webster County Jail in Marshfield.
Calls during this period included:
Jan. 1
• Several “911” calls were placed for a subject driving all over the highway in an unsafe manner. A vehicle description was dispatched to officers and was located a short time later on the city square. Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle after observing several violations. The gentleman was older and having troubles driving.
Jan. 2
• In the morning hours, officers were dispatched to a motor-vehicle accident at the intersection of U.S. 60 and Loveland Street. While officers were on scene, several other vehicles struck the vehicles involved in the original accident. A total of eight vehicles were involved. The heavy fog and vehicles stopping on U.S. 60 at the light is believed to be the cause of the accident.
Jan. 3
• A call was dispatched to officers for two juveniles that left home in the overnight hours. Officers were able to locate the teens not far from the residences and return them home.
Jan. 4
• Officers received a call for a subject who had an active warrant out for their arrest. Officers responded to the location and made contact with a subject. The subject was arrested on an active warrant and transported to the Webster County Jail.
Jan. 5
• A call was made to the police department from a subject living out of their car around town. The subject was wanting to park in the streets and in the residents’ driveways to sleep. Subject was advised they cannot park blocking roadway or in people’s driveways to live out of their car.
Jan. 6
• A “911” call was placed for a structure fire in the area for South Division and Puryear streets. Officers responded to the location once fire was dispatched. Officers were able to discover there was a brush pile a neighbor was burning behind the structure. The fire department was canceled as the burn was controlled.
Jan. 7
• A strange call came for a subject running after cars in the area of Anderson and Frances streets. The caller said the subject was running after cars as if they were trying to catch up or open a door. Officers were able to locate and identify the subject. They were advised to stay out of the middle of the roadway and not to run up on vehicles in transport.
Jan. 8
• Seymour officers were dispatched for a subject who called in stating they were kidnapped and currently in town. Officer was able to respond to the location and find the caller. The subject was in fact at home and appeared to be having some medical troubles. Officers were able to assist in getting the subject transported to a health facility.
Jan. 9
• Several calls were made to “911” dispatch for subjects’ driving. Careless-and-imprudent driving calls are dispatched to officers several times a week. The department encourages residents to call in if they believe there is an issue present with someone’s driving.
Jan. 10
• Officers received a call about a dog that was hit on Steel Street at McDonald’s. Some people were traveling through town and stopped at local restaurant to stretch and get a bite to eat. The travelers had their doors open on the car, and their dog then bolted out into the roadway and was struck. The vehicle that hit the dog stopped and assisted them in loading the dog and pointing them to the closest veterinary clinic to have the dog evaluated.
Jan. 11
• A subject was trespassed from The Seymour Bank for coming in to the bank on several occasions and causing issues. Officers responded to the location and made contact with a male who was inside the bank. The subject had no business with the bank and was just trying to create problems. The subject was escorted off the property.
Jan. 12
• In the evening hours, officers received a call for a subject “who had been shot three of four times.” Officers responded to the location to contact the subject, who was intoxicated. The subject stated he had been shot with an AirSoft gun by his friend’s kid. Subject did not want any charges; he just wanted to let us know.
Jan. 13
• Complaints were made to officers about subjects parking on Forrest Road in the evening hours, possibly doing drugs, drinking and damaging property. Officers have been patrolling the area. Any vehicles left in the lot without owner permission will be towed.
Jan. 14
• While on patrol in the overnight hours, city officers observed a door to residence open. When officers were approaching the house, they could hear a subject crying. Officers contacted the resident to ensure everything was fine. The subject was upset and forgot to shut the door.
Jan. 15
• Officers responded to a call for a neighbor’s outbuilding being opened and also unlocked. Responding officer was able to secure the building. The Seymour Police Department would like to remind residents to lock up your things before leaving home to help prevent theft.
Jan. 16
• In the afternoon hours, officers were dispatched to the Church of Christ in Seymour for subject laying in the ditch. When officers arrived, they observed a female laying on the ground. The female was under the influence of narcotics and was transported to the Webster County Jail.
Jan. 17
• A report of a theft in progress was called in to officers. A subject advised their lawn mower was stolen from their shed, and they heard a person drive off on it. Officers were able to locate the mower in a garage on the next street over. Three days later, a tip of the suspects location was given to officers. The subject was located and arrested in Ava for felony stealing.
Jan. 18
• A local multi-jurisdictional drug task force team served a search warrant on a residence in town. Officers were able to assist in the warrant to ensure safety. The warrant resulted in narcotics being located and charges filed on two subjects.
Jan. 19
• A tip was given to local officers about some street signs that had been taken around the area. Officers were able to make contact with a subject and retrieve more than 20 stolen street signs from Webster and Christian counties.
Jan. 20
• During the day, officers were able to locate and arrest two subjects that lived in Seymour with active warrants out for their arrest. Both subjects were arrested and transported to the Webster County Jail.
Jan. 21
• While on patrol, officers observed a vehicle traveling slowing down the roadway appeared to be having issues. Officers followed the vehicle with lights on to ensure it did not cause an accident. A fire then broke out from the vehicle. Officers were able to suppress the fire to cause only minor damage to the vehicle.
Jan. 22
• Seymour’s officers and county deputies were dispatched to the area of U.S. 60 and Killdeer Road for a subject walking down the highway and jumping out in front of vehicles. Officers responded to the area and located a female subject who was hit by a car. The person who hit the subject is still unknown. The female was transported a local hospital with serious injuries.
Jan. 23
• A call was placed to the police department for a subject walking about the Victory Academy property. Officers responded and made contact with a subject walking down the road. The subject had an active warrant out for their arrest. They were arrested by officers and transported to the Douglas County Jail in Ava.
Jan. 24
• Driving complaints were given to officers about subjects on the square “drifting” in the ice and snow and almost hitting a parked vehicle at Family Dollar. Officers were able to locate the subjects.
Jan. 25
• In the afternoon hours, a complaint was made for people throwing snowballs at cars on West Clinton Avenue by the McDonald’s. Officers responded to the area, where two teenagers were located who were throwing the snowballs. No charges were filed by the victims. However, the teens were taken home to their parents.
Jan. 26
• In the morning hours, officers were dispatched to a vehicle off in the ditch at Clinton Avenue by the Rusty Spurs Cafe. When officers arrived, there was no one located around the car. A short investigation led to the discovery of the driver inside the Rusty Spurs Cafe drinking coffee. The subject was intoxicated at more than twice the legal limit. They were arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI).
Jan. 27
• During overnight hours, two subjects were dropped off at Casey’s who were attempting to hitchhike to Mansfield. Officers were able to assist the subjects in getting to Mansfield, given the weather conditions.
Jan. 28
• A report for a subject driving in a careless manner was dispatched to officers. The vehicle was located on Clinton Avenue. The driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. After a brief roadside investigation, the driver was arrested for DWI after being over three times the legal limit.
Jan. 29
• Several calls were made to the police station for two big dogs loose in the area of Summit Avenue and Water Street. The dogs had been reported out several times in the last few weeks. A local resident was able to catch the dogs. The owners of the dogs were issued citations.
Jan. 30
• Officers got a call for subjects doing donuts in the snow and ice in the parking lot on Forrest Road, across from the doctor’s office. The subjects doing the donuts kicked up rocks and caused chips to windows at the business. An investigation is currently ongoing for property damage.
