Seymour has a Christmas parade.

Christmas movies at the historic Owen Theatre.

Even an official lighting of the city’s Christmas tree.

But there was no Christmas-lights contest.

Until this year.

The new Christmas house-decorating contest, officially named “Seymour Shines,” will be judged on the same night as the Seymour Christmas Parade, which is  this Saturday, explained Terry Penner, the city of Seymour’s community development director.

Penner said anyone interested in entering the contest can do so in person at Seymour City Hall or by sending an e-mail to her at terry@seymourmissouri.org.

The deadline to enter is 5:30 p.m. this Friday.

  • “A home or yard won’t have its Christmas lights judged unless it is registered,” she noted.
  • Judging is from dusk until 10 p.m. on Dec. 4 for all who have registered.
  • Judged will be outside decorations only.

Prizes will go to three winners.

  • First place receives $100 cash from Seymour’s Wholesale Monument Company.
  • Second earns $50, courtesy of Joanne Coutchie of Seymour’s Murney Realtors.
  • And third place gets $25 from the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home of Seymour.

In addition, all three winners will receive custom yard signs, noting they are the contest’s winners.

There also is a competition for businesses in Seymour.

Penner said storefronts that are decorated for Christmas will be judged, with the winner receiving a trophy. Second and third places will receive window signs.

All entries must be located within Seymour’s city limits.
