For the first time since The Seymour Bank began sponsoring the annual event, the Seymour High School junior-varsity boys’ basketball team is playing for the championship of The Seymour Bank Winter Classic.
Seymour advanced to the title game, which is set to tip off at 4 p.m. today (Wednesday) by defeating Bradleyville and Mountain Grove, respectively, in the first two rounds of action.
The Tigers cruised past Bradleyville 54-17 in the opening round on Tuesday, Jan. 7, then defeated Mountain Grove by a 53-40 count last Thursday.
Saturday’s title game was postponed due to inclement weather.
The two wins improved Seymour’s jayvee record to 7-3.
In the 37-point victory over Bradleyville’s Eagles, the Tiger scoring attack was led by 6’2” sophomore forward Bryson Benson with 12 points. He also had 11 rebounds.
Freshman Cooper Bunch added a career-high 11 points, while sophomore point guard Payton Bryant scored 10 and handed out 6 assists.
Freshmen Derek Akers and Bill Daily each scored 7.
Freshman Eli Nunnally added 6 points, while freshman Kyran Hepko rounded out the scoring with 1.
In Thursday’s win over Mountain Grove’s Panthers, the Tigers’ top scorer was Bryant with 18 points.
Nunnally scored 13.
Daily had 9 points, Benson added 8, while Bunch rounded out the scoring with 5.
After tonight’s tourney title game, next action for the jayvee Tigers arrives at 6 p.m. Friday when Conway visits for a Summit Conference contest.
