Steve Richards

Superintendent, Seymour R-II School

Hello, everyone.

This is the first of a regular series of columns that I’ll be writing for the Webster County Citizen to keep our patrons updated on the happening at your local school.

We’ll start off by talking about the upcoming 2020-21 school year here at the Seymour R-II School District.

I suppose the best way to say it is that school starts on Tuesday, Aug. 25, and we will have seated instruction for all students in all grade levels.

Here in the next couple of weeks, I will provide a complete list of safety measures that the district will have in place when classes start late next month.

There are several state guidelines we will follow.

At this time, we will have face coverings available to all students and staff members.

We currently are in the process of developing guidelines for those requirements.

Again, I’ll go into more detail on this in the future before classes start.

Another safety measure we’ll have in place is that we’ll have hand-sanitizing stations located throughout each of our school buildings.

Temperature checks will be taken, as needed.

There is little doubt that we, as a district, will learn as we go throughout this process as we return to school with fears about COVID-19 still existing.

What I can say with absolute certainty is that the Seymour R-II School District will focus on the side of caution and the safety of our students and staff. Keeping everyone safe is our top priority.

One thing that I will ask of you, parents and guardians, is that you do your part in helping keep our school safe when classes resume on Aug. 25.

We ask that you screen your children for symptoms of COVID-19 at home, prior to coming to school. Among the symptoms to look for are:

• Fever or chills.

• Cough and/or headache.

• Muscle aches.

• Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

• New loss of taste or smell.

• New runny nose or congestion.

• Shortness of breath or diffi culty breathing.

• Sore throat.

• Most importantly, close contact with a person with the COVID-19 virus in the last 14 days.

Thank you for your patience in this process.

And thank you for trusting us with your children, as they are our community’s greatest asset.

We will do our part to keep them safe.

I’m looking forward to seeing you when classes resume in Seymour on Aug. 25.
