We have had this question from multiple sites lately, but it is unrelated to TownNews.com. Our research has shown that the take overs are from the apps and phones themselves.
These pop-ups are malware. We've found an article (see below) that talks about what needs to be done on the device to rid yourself of them.
These pop-ups are very common on iphones and in Safari the Safari browsers. But can appear on desktop and android as well. Typically they happen after users have clicked on an article in FB and go to a website. The article you show below is in facebook. It doesn’t mean they only get the pop-ups when coming from facebook as after you have infected the device, they can happen at will. They typically mask themselves with Websites as individual apps are hard to infect.
These are better ad violations but since the intruders target individual phones they are very difficult to track down as they don’t go through the typical ad serving process. You can see the article above talks about the same kind of pop-ups you mentioned.
The larger websites with lots of social traffic have been dealing with these pop-ups and are getting more and more frustrated as users think it’s their website causing the issue when it has to do with the user’s device. Guilty by association is hard to overcome.
